Singer 50D - SewHandy Electric

I've gotten to the point that I don't buy every cheap sewing machine I come across. There are exceptions though, and here's one I couldn't pass up. A Singer SewHandy Electric model 50D, for the princely sum of $4.99 plus tax.

This model plugs into a 110v wall outlet, so there are no batteries to mess with (and no corrosive byproducts that seem to come with old battery powered toys).

The right knob turns the motor on and off, while the left lever is the clutch to engage and disengage the rubber-tired drive wheel.

The thread spool makes this thing look tiny.

It still sews great. It makes a chain stitch, so it can easily be pulled out in case of a boo boo.

This is a shot of where the motor and rubber drive wheel reside.

The back comes off with two screws so the internal workings can be lubricated. Notice the timing belt in the left part of the photo.

Such a deal, I couldn't pass it up. They even gave me a 15% off senior discount.

Here is a photo of the 50D next to my Singer 404.

Haven't picked up a SewHandy yet because eBay prices for these micro machines are too princely for me! Need to spend more time haunting the thrift shops. I originally wanted one just for the chain stitch but now have a Singer 600 and 648 that both do chainstitch with attachments, and an early Willcox and Gibbs that is a dedicated chainstitch. So now I just 'need' a SewHandy for the cute factor...

I just bought a SewHandy. It is so cute! I need a spool pin. I tried a spool pin from from a 401 and it was too big. Any suggestions?

If the pin you tried is plastic/nylon, you could possibly sand its diameter down with sand paper to make it fit.

The nice couple at Suncatcher.tx can help you with the spool pin.
