Lagun Table Leg For The Bigfoot Camper

Many truck campers have a rudimentary dinette table mount, usually a metal tube that inserts into a floor mount, and into a corresponding mount on the underside of the table. Ours was no different. A year or so ago I replaced the original table with this egg-shaped one that took up less space and used only one of the two legs from the original larger table. It was an improvement in space optimization but still was lacking somehow.

There were several problems with the "fixed" leg holding up the table. First, it was not easy for us to move around while sitting in the dinette with the table pretty much fixed in one of two spots. Second, the original table used two mounting bases in the floor (at least I got rid of one leg when I went to the new table), and with the mounting bases on the floor being aluminum, they are cold on our socked feet, but we can't put a rug over them because the have to stay accessible for the table leg. The table also doesn't have a lot of freedom of movement.

Enter the Lagun table leg. Here's a photo from Lagun's website (I don't think they'd mind me "borrowing" their photo):

The Lagun leg can raise and lower, and the top arm and table base swivel 360 degrees.

The first step in mounting the Lagun leg in our camper was to find a suitable location that allowed for maximum benefit. Since our non-slide camper doesn't have a lot of extra room in the dinette area, and there are two furnace ducts in the way, there was pretty much only one place to put the leg.

Next is to check behind the location to make sure nothing is in the way.

I cut a slot in this strip of wood so the leg will fit into the bracket once it is mounted in place. The cut strip of wood is for when the dinette is made into a bed, which we never do, but will still work if needed. I also had to  put a piece of 1/2-inch plywood behind the aluminum leg mounting base so the leg would clear the rest of the trim.

Here is the leg in its final resting place. The two white plastic things on the cushion are wedges that came with the leg assembly. They are used if you need to mount the leg to a sloping wall. I didn't need them.

I temporarily put the egg-shaped table top on the new leg just to see how it works. We're planning on getting a nicer looking table top.

The table has a lot of options for where to put it now. The whole assembly can also be removed from the mounting base if needed. And we can have a rug over the two aluminum leg bases on the floor. Yay!

The table can really swing out of the way now, and there are no support tubes poking out of the floor, giving a much roomier feel. Hey, it's a camper. We'll take all the additional square inches of floor space we can get.
