More Wood Turning on the New HF Lathe

So far I'm putting the new/old wood lathe to good use. Ok, maybe not "good" use but it is getting used. I've had the lathe for almost a month. I've made three bowls, a candle holder, a dried flower holder, and two pens. This first photo is the latest, a candle holder. Next to it is a fused glass piece my wife made in her studio.

The wood is Madrone (Arbutus). It started life on our piece of property here in Poulsbo, and ended up on the wood pile when the tree needed trimming, for use in the small wood burning fire pit. Several days ago I was perusing the wood pile in hopes of finding something I could use for a project and this piece of wood (below) was near the top of the pile. It had a nice little defect that I was hoping would become something nice. I had no idea what I was going to make with the wood chunk but just started whittling away at it.

This is what turned (ha ha) up.

Next are a few photos below of the finished product with Watco oil on it.

The first photo at the top had a real candle burning in the thing but it was getting hot to the touch so I guess real candles are out, unless they are only used for a short period.

Below is a bowl I made from, you guessed it, Madrone. This chunk of "wood pile" wood has a bunch of worm holes in it but I had no idea the extent of the damage inside until I started turning the wood.

I'm cutting off the center support here.

Annnnnnd, the finished product below. It took quite a while to clear out the worm holes of "stuff". Lots of picking with a needle, compressed air, more picking, wire brushing, picking, air, etc. It turned out nice though.

I'd made this flower vase a few weeks ago but didn't like the looks of it, so after making the above bowl, I decided to trim off the bottom of the vase.

Here is the finished product. Much better looking.
