1940 John Deere AR - Straightening Rear Fenders

The rear fenders on this tractor are big. And being so big, any little bit they are out of kilter really shows up. The right fender is the worst and tilts inward quite a bit, but the left fender was also tilted in just a bit. This first photo shows the right fender pretty dramatically.

The above and below photos were taken the day I bought the tractor, while it was still on the trailer. The photo below shows the left fender tipping inward at the top somewhat but it's not so pronounced.

An 86-year-old tractor is bound to have fender supports that are not as straight as they used to be. In order to get the fender moved outward at the top, I had to use a ratchet strap to persuade things into position. Fortunately ....

.... my JD HN was conveniently parked not too far away.

The photo below is after the job was completed.

This last photo has a red arrow pointing to the 1/2 inch spacer I put in place to get the right fender positioned where it needed to be. Prior to the fix, the piece of sheet metal just to the right of the arrow's tip was tight up against the transmission housing. I was able to fix the left fender by just loosening some fasteners and pulling the fender into position, then tightening up the fasteners. The fenders will no longer bother me every time I walk up to this tractor.
