With the rear cover plate on the differential, the transmission/differential assembly is ready to reinstall in the tractor and it's time to look at the few other details I need to work on. The first order of business was to free up the brake rods and adjusting yokes that are in the final drives. Well, while trying to free the first yoke with heat and penetrating oil, it snapped the brake rod. I found a bolt that had the same 5/16-24 thread pitch, cut the head off, then ground tapers on the bolt and rod to prepare for welding.
I welded the parts together and ground the bead smooth. I then tapped the threads to the correct length to replicate the original rod.
I had put the pinion shaft front cover on the transmission but today I decided to take it off again and make a new gasket for it, as I'd previously reused the old crusty gasket. After cutting the outside of the new gasket to fit the steel cover, I placed the gasket on the cover, then used a ball pein hammer at each of the cover holes to cut out the bolt holes.
It works surprising well.
The rear end banjo housing is ready for the transaxle assembly to go in.
The transaxle is fairly heavy and difficult to manhandle into place but it is doable.
Time to bolt it in.
The shifter is now on.
And the driveshaft.
I started up the tractor to get oil circulating in the transmission and differential, and I noticed the driveshaft was off center by quite a bit, so I loosened the fabric disk bolts and was able to persuade the shaft into a better alignment. In the photo you can see a wire next to the shaft that I used as a gauge to adjust the gap evenly.
A drawbar 5/8-11 bolt in the left final drive had broken on disassembly, so I needed to rectify that situation, something I was not looking forward to. I tried welding on a nut (several times) to break loose the stuck bolt stub but I was unsuccessful. Sometimes that method works great and other times it doesn't. So the next order of business was to drill out the stub and install a threaded insert.
This next photo is showing the threaded insert going in.
The final drive and fender is in place on the left side of the tractor. I'm still waiting for brake band lining material to arrive so I can reline the right brake band. This left band was in good shape so I didn't bother replacing the lining.
