This next set of photos shows more of the greasy mess inside the differential. See that green stuff on the left side? That's a glob of grease that was plugging a through-hole between the transmission and differential.
The photo below is the reverse idler gear and shaft. The shaft in the center of the gear is hollow and is supposed to supply lubricating oil to this gear's bushing, and also to the input shaft rear bearing, but the bore is full of grease so not much lubrication was going on here.
The reverse idler gear shaft is held into the transmission case with a hex head set screw that has a point on it. I easily removed what I thought was the entirety of the set screw, then proceeded to hammer out the shaft. It came out with some amount of difficulty but not an extreme amount. I then noticed what I later realized to be the tip of the set screw lodged in the shaft. Somehow in the past the set screw had broken in half, so I only removed the outer 2/3rds of the set screw, leaving the inner part set in place with the tip still protruding into the shaft.
This next photo shows the stub of the set screw that I ground cone-shaped so I could reuse it, which seemed to work just fine.
Here are all the parts cleaned up. What a chore to degrease (literally) everything.
The transmission input shaft can be removed without taking the transmission/differential out of the tractor. The previous owner had replaced the input shaft front cup and cone bearing set, and also the rear cone bearing, but they did not replace the rear cup, which is shown below. The rear cup can only be removed after the transmission/differential is out of the tractor and pretty much completely disassembled.
Oh, and here's that worn-out brake band.
The differential bearings came off without much fuss.
These next two photos show the bearing shims used on either side of the differential. From what I could measure, there were two .005" shims and three .003" shims on the left side...
... while the right side had one .010" shim and one .030" shim.
