1957 Petter Diesel Engine Gets A New Air Cleaner

Prior to buying this engine, I'd called the previous owner and asked him some questions. One was about the air cleaner, or more accurately, about the missing air cleaner in the photos. I asked if he had the air cleaner. He said something to the effect that it does have an air filter but not the original. When I went to buy the engine, the below photo is what I found mounted on the engine. It's the white pleated thing. He said it was a vacuum cleaner filter (!) but it works fine.

Well, we can't have a vacuum cleaner filter on this fine engine, so I went online hoping to find something interesting looking, and for fairly cheap. Nope, I couldn't find a thing. A couple months go by after buying the engine and my wife and I were in Oregon City, Oregon, rummaging through a thrift store. What do my eyes behold? The perfect air cleaner assembly. And the best part? It was only $5. And..... no tax (because, Oregon)! Wow. You'll have to wait a few minutes to see what it actually looks like.

The easy part was buying the air cleaner. The slightly more difficult part was to adapt it to the Petter's aluminum intake elbow. The OD of the intake elbow was inch and a half. I had some exhaust pipe that was inch and a quarter or maybe inch and three eighths ID. I decided that would be good enough to fabricate a clamp from. After some slight bending, tweaking and welding, here's the clamp:

The air cleaner had a mounting flange on it that I was able to partially use for my purposes. The usable part is on the left below. The raised center ring fits inside the intake elbow, and the fabricated clamp will be concentric with that ring but will fit onto the OD of the elbow.

After some judicious grinding on one of the raised buttons seen in the photo above left, the clamp fit tight to the sheet metal flange so it could be welded in place. See below.

Here it is mounted onto the engine.

Isn't it cute? The perfect size and shape too.
