1966 Barracuda Trunk Lid Repair - Part 1

Time to tackle the trunk lid rust. This trunk lid has less damage than the one that came with the car. Below is the driver's side corner partially complete.

The inner sheet metal is done, next step is to weld in the outer skin lip that had rusted away.

Outer skin grafts welded in.

Next is the passenger side repair.

Once all the welding was done, I started removing the paint from the outer skin. Here's where I ran into a serious problem.

Yep, a bunch of pinholes. It appears the rust came through from the inside out, as there was hardly any indication in the paint that something was going on. Now I'm not sure if it will be easier to weld up 20 or 30 holes in the sheet metal of this lid or weld up the inner lip of the original lid. In any case, the weather is changing later in the week and I need to get the car painted before the rain comes, so I'm putting the trunk lid repair on the back burner for now. Painting the rest of the car will be the next installment.
