I have always been partial to the black Singer 15-91s. Gear drive, no belts to replace, simple straight stitch, easy to maintain, pretty much bullet-proof in every way.
But now that I have picked up a 15-125 (and a 185K), I may have to rethink my fondness for black. I don't know why I like these old green Singer machines, but they just look so cool.

I guess it was the 'in' thing in late 50s to offer a green sewing machine.

I have a Singer 185K. I bought it because I liked the 3/4 size and color. But at the time I avoided buying straight stitch machines because I didn't see the point in buying a machine that only does one stitch. So I bought heavy, all metal vintage zig zag machines instead. But then I sewed with my 185K and my perspective completely changed. I love the small width on the feed dogs. It allows me to sew real close to the end of fleece when I make dogs toys. My Singer 185K is now one of my favorite machines. It's really smooth & quiet. And the metal parts in the bobbin case look and feel like they're really well made. I'd like to own a Singer 99 but haven't found one at a reasonable price yet.
The sound and precision of a well-running straight stitch machine is something to behold for those of us that are partial to this hobby. I did pick up a Singer 99 some time back for $50 in a bentwood case. It wasn't a steal but I feel it was a fair price at that point in my hobby. Thanks for the comment.
A Singer 99 in a bentwood case would be awesome! I'd pay a little extra for that if the case was in good shape. I've only seen 99s in the tan & burgundy carrying case.
That Alder you have pictured looks like a heavy duty machine! Have you had a chance to sew with it? Have you done any research on it?
The Adler is almost industrial strength but it suffers from the dreaded "deteriorated timing belt" disease. And there are no replacement belts available that I know of. It is very unfortunate. I may someday figure out how to get it running again, but for now, it is relegated to the doorstop pile.
I have an identical Adler with a belt in good condition that I hope to get many more years from (knock on wood). It is a joy to use.
I have an Adler and have the deteriorated belt disease!!! Does anybody know where or with which one I can replace it to make it work?

Hi Andy, you did a fantastic job getting that Adler cleaned up and running. It looks great. Gives me hope that I can get mine going someday.
Hi there, I just found a company in Italy that may carry this timing belt. Check out their part catalog: http://www.brunoanichini.it/cataloghi/durkopp/044.pdf
On the top right section you'll see a part number 0489-102150. I believe it's the same 58 teeth timing belt since the 0489 stands for Adler 489 series, which I think uses the same belt as the 189. Now the problem is how to contact this company. I tried but they haven't gotten back to me.
And by the way, the belt on top of the page, is in fact for Adler 153. I'm almost positive because it says KL153, or class 153. The teeth count is 57. The material looks like neoprene and I have seen 153 with this type of belt on eBay. If you have any luck buying it from this company please let me know.
